A convection-permitting and limited-area model hindcast driven by ERA5 data: precipitation performances in Italy

Abstract This study describes the implementation and performances of a weather hindcast obtained by dynamically downscaling ERA5 data across period 1979–2019. The limited-area models used to perform are BOLAM (with grid spacing 7 km over Mediterranean domain) MOLOCH 2.5 Italy). is provide initial boundary conditions inner model, which set in convection-permitting configuration. such limited-area, high-resolution long-term evaluated comparing modelled precipitation against two gridded observational datasets. Any potential added-value BOLAM/MOLOCH assessed with respect ERA5-Land data, as benchmark. Results demonstrate that hindcast, compared observations, provides lower bias than regards both mean annual rainfall ( $$-$$ - 1.3% vs 8.7%) 90th percentile summer daily precipitation, although wet found southern Italy (bias $$\simeq$$ ? 17.1%).
